AmeriCorps VISTA

 

Position Overview:

This position is an AmeriCorps VISTA service opportunity. The VISTA Program Development  Coordinator will evaluate and build the capacity of COM's job and  life skills training program, called Project Thrive, that empowers low-income households with skills for long-term success  and helps connect individuals to meaningful employment opportunities. The program creates internship opportunities at COM for unemployed clients, educates clients on life skills and employment soft skills, and connect clients to long-term employers upon completion of the program. The Program Development Coordinator will research current assets and resources in the community, review and revise the Project Thrive program materials, and recruit volunteers to assist with and run the program. They will also coordinate with local businesses to establish partnerships which will allow for employment opportunities for clients upon completion of the program. A big piece of the position will also be aiding in securing grants and funding for the growth and long-term sustainability of Project Thrive. The VISTA member will have the opportunity to interact with COM staff, other local agencies, and community leaders throughout Polk County. The work this position accomplishes will help COM build up a program for addressing poverty in an empowering and holistic manner and will ultimately help numerous individuals in the community.

 

Benefits: AmeriCorps will pay a living stipend (approx. $575 biweekly), provide health insurance, child care assistance, relocation for those moving to Bolivar, and an end-of-service award (choice of $6345 toward educational expenses or $1800 cash). COM will also provide a one-time $500 housing stipend payable to a local landlord for accepted VISTA members.

 

Hours: 32-40 hours/week.

 

Dates of Service: 12 months beginning spring 2022
